Here's a bunch of characters no one, not even most comic book fans, had ever heard about 4 years ago, easily beating some of the most iconic and beloved comic book characters of all time. I'm not sure whether it's a testament to Marvel's ability to make crowd-pleasing films or WB's sheer incompetence, but the fact that GOTG2 beat out JL's opening weekend by over $50 million is astounding. Blame Snyder for trying to change that so late in the game. It's partially Warners fault for trying to throw so much into the picture, but this was not a last-minute change: the film was always contracted to be around two-and-a-half hours. Snyder delivered a cut that was both half an hour longer than he was contracted and longer than could be released at IMAX theaters. Because of the sheer weight of the platters it's not possible to run the film with an intermission because that would mean changing platters - which literally requires a forklift truck.

Unfortunately this is not foolproof, and caused problems for theaters showing Interstellar and Avatar, so even re-equipped venues are reluctant to book films that long. The film was specifically intended as an IMAX release, and they can only run a maximum 167 minutes, with some older IMAX venues only able to handle around 150 minutes because of platter size - to run any longer requires a change to the clamp system that keeps the film on the platter from the top to the bottom, allowing more film to wrap around the outermost edge without flying off. Except that was never, ever the contracted or even the 'natural' running time.
